Profile: Musa S. Kamara is a broadcast journalist who began his career as an intern at the Mass Communication Department, Fourah Bay College. For more than a decade, he has worked for one of the most popular news outlets in Sierra Leone—the Society for Radio Democracy 98.1 F.M.

Over the years, Kamara has been a consistent advocate on a wide range of issues, including but not limited to the environment, climate change, disaster management, sports, and—principal among them—human rights and democracy. in his practice as a journalist, Kamara has faced several threats to his life. One instance occurred after the 2023 multitier elections in Sierra Leone. Kamara had interviewed the then-U.S Ambassador David Remier, who discredited Sierra Leone’s 2023 election results. As a result of this interview, Kamara faced a host of threats and cyberbullying from members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party, which at one point prevented him from working and forced him to seek refuge. Police are investigating the matter.

Besides the 2023 elections incident, Kamara has faced many persecutions from both supporters of the ruling party and the opposition—depending on the outcome of his tough interviews with political leaders on Radio Democracy “Gud Monin Salon” program. Nonetheless, he continues to do his work: “It is worth noting,” he says, “that I am facing cyberbullying on a daily basis. In some situations, even studio guests will tend to threaten you. I do not compromise standards, and I do not negotiate in an interview or in the stories I report. In some cases, a guest will show up in the studio and say, please take it easy with me, and I will reply, I do not negotiate interviews and journalistic standards.”

Kamara also receives numerous bribes but remains professional and continues to ask authorities the necessary tough questions and not compromise the truth.
